Abstract

In this critical essay, I will explore the prospect of “new mass literature” reflected mainly in the creative non-fiction of Lualhati Milan Abreu. On new mass literature, I refer to the thoughts of Gelacio Guillermo that it asserts the right of the people for national sovereignty, unite them on the basis of this right, and cultivate everything that can enhance this unity and national dignity. I will start by outlining the main thoughts about the function of each citizen in the social whole. Then, I will give a short note on who Lualhati Milan Abreu is. After which, I will outline her main thoughts reflected mainly in her Agaw-dilim, Agaw-liwanag. Lastly, I will scrutinize how these thoughts mirror the so called women empowerment, mass literature and societal change through literature.
