This study examines the effectiveness of Russian military strategy in the Ukraine war through the lens of Sun-Tzu’s strategic philosophy. Grounded in Sun-Tzu’s principles of warfare, the study evaluates Russian strategy using five key elements: Leader Values, People’s Belief, Mitigation, Environment, and Information. Employing a qualitative methodology, the research analyzes military decisions and tactics based on these strategic dimensions. Findings indicate that while Russia initially relied on deception and overwhelming force, its failure to achieve a swift victory stemmed from flawed planning, underestimated Ukrainian resistance, and logistical challenges. The study highlights the critical role of intelligence, adaptability, and psychological warfare, emphasizing the impact of leadership perception and civilian morale on military success. Furthermore, the research underscores the significance of terrain, information warfare, and adaptive countermeasures in shaping conflict outcomes. The findings suggest that Russia’s strategic misalignment with Sun-Tzu’s principles—particularly regarding prolonged engagement and failure to secure rapid strategic objectives—contributed to its operational setbacks. This study concludes that classical military philosophy remains highly relevant in contemporary warfare, providing insights into strategic decision-making. It recommends that military planners integrate Sun-Tzu’s principles of intelligence, flexibility, and psychological operations to enhance strategic effectiveness in modern conflicts.
